74.28 pc students pass HSC exams

The results of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations-2010 broke all previous records with a pass rate of 74.28 per cent and a sharp leap in the number of GPA-5 scorers.
As many as 28,671 students of 10 education boards received the highest score of GPA-5 (grade point average) this year. Last year the pass rate was 72.78. with 20,136 students getting the highest grade point.
The number of educational institutions with cent percent pass has also increased to 714 from last year's 674.
A total of 7, 18,084 examinees, including 3, 31,413 females, appeared the examinations this year of whom 5,33,369 students came out successful.
Sylhet Board secured top position in the list with the rate of pass at 76.12 per cent while the rate of pass in Rajshahi Board 75.43 percent, Barisal Board 74.34 per cent, Comilla Board 73.13, Chittagong Board 72.65 percent, Dhaka Board 72.10 per cent, Jessore Board 67.73, and Dinajpur Board 67.54 per cent.
On the other hand, the rate of success in the Madrasa Board is 86.55 per cent and Technical Board 82.48 per cent.
For the first time, the results of one of the most important public examinations were published after only 57 days of the examinations, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said at a press briefing at the secretariat.
In Dhaka Board, Mymensingh Girls' Cadet College, Mymensingh clinched the credit of the highest ranking point 89.60 followed by Mirzapur Cadet College, Tangail ranking point 85.36 and Holy Cross College ranking point 83.03.
A total of 714 educational institutions including 14 under Dhaka Board, 12 under Rajshahi Board, five under Comilla Board, six under Jessore Board, seven under Chittagong Board, eight under Barisal Board, four under Sylhet Board, five under Dinajpur Board, 546 under Madrasah Education Board and 107 under Technical Education Board have scored the credit of 100 percent pass.
The percentages of pass for boys and girls are 74.62 and 73.87 respectively against 73.64 and 71.71 of last year.
Some 20,136 examinees - 16,769 male and 11,902 female – have secured the highest Grade Point Average (GPA)-5. Of them, 11,020 are from Dhaka Board, 5,602 from Rajshahi Board, 1,168 from Comilla Board, 2,236 from Jessore Board, 1,618 from Chittagong Board, 1,457 from Sylhet Board, 597 from Barisal Board, 2,957 from Dinajpur, 2,957 from Madrasa Board and 202 from Technical Education Board.
Like the previous year, colleges in urban areas, particularly those in metropolitan cities, dominated the GPA-5 category and institutions with hundred per cent pass rate.
In Dhaka Board, 1,40,548 students out of 1,94,925 examinees passed the examinations while 61,987 out of 82,174 candidates under Rajshahi Board, 39,444 out of 53,934 in Comilla, 53,370 out of 78,801 in Jessore Board, 31,224 out of 42,976 in Chittagong Board, 26,125 out of 35,141 in Barisal Board, 15,087 out of 19,802 in Sylhet Board, 49,2020 out of 72,852 in Dinajpur Board came out successful.
A total of 73,790 students appeared in Madrasah Education Board and 63,864 of them passed with pass percentage of 86.55 against 84.14 of last year.
Expressing satisfaction over this year's HSC results, the Education Minister said stern action against cheating in the public examinations has helped to make the students more attentive to study, which has been key to achieving good results.
